berlin braves baseball back at Tempelhof
TiB x Berlin Braves 2016 - Team 1 by Max Hink

On April 10, the baseball first team of the Berlin Braves played its first official game, which was also the team's home opener at the “Field of Dreams”. Supported by a great atmosphere despite chilly and grey weather, the Braves beat the Berlin Wizards 10-2 to earn the first win in club history. Former MVP Julius Mannel's strong pitching and great day at the plate, backed by a sturdy defence, led the way while CF Baptist Hirt recorded the new team's first hit and coach Yan St-Pierre's the first homerun.

In the second game of the double-header, the Braves were unable to protect a 3-0 first inning lead and lost 17-4. Braves starting pitcher Fritz Leidinger ran into trouble in the second inning and the bullpen was unable to minimize the damage while Wizards pitcher Stoddard silenced the Braves' bats after a rocky first inning.

The game day also featured the T1 debut of the team's new shortstop Philipp Moskopp, new “import” Marco Turrini and rookie prospect Jaro Bruders.

GAME NOTES – Game 1 was Mannel's second career season opener he's 1-0; Joey Elgersma recorded the team's first steal; Turrini left the second game in the 2nd inning due to a shoulder injury;  Reliever Jeff Grothe made his pitching debut in game 2. St-Pierre's homerun was his 4th lifetime vs the Wizards, the most he's hit against any team.
